Victor Francis Hess (1883–1964), Physicist.

Born in Waldstein Castle, Styria, on June 24, 1883, Hess discovered cosmic rays, winning him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1936. He escaped Nazi persecution by relocating to the United States with his wife in 1938, where Fordham University appointed him Professor of Physics.
